Conclusion

The interaction project has been better than other projects such as Capture and Commision, I believe this is mainly because of the quality of feedback and communication between us and Simon Bates, rather than Tony Jones and Five Leaves Publishing. In the Capture project we had no feedback and zero communication and in Commision it was almost as bad for example I was asked to edit a short reels and put them together for use at the Cambridge Film Festival and the Shop Windows. I got little feedback from the client and much of it was sporadic and hardly ever on time. Working with Simon Bates and the Junction was a much better experience and a learning curve. It showed that even though we were students that he trusted us enough to give us this opportunity and treated us as if we weren't students give us information on time and was always constructive.

The end result from working with a partner was a positive one with both sides happy with the products made.

Skill Set

The Junction are commisioning us for our project but SkillSet are funding the Junction to create experiences in creative and media careers. SkillSet are 'the Sector Skills Council for Creative Media'. SkillSet and Simon Bates have given us the opportunity to work with Bournemouth University

Companies involved in Project Interaction

These are logos of the Companies who are involved with our Project. It is imporant to show these as the project wouldn't have gone ahead without the work from people in these companies.

Rough Cut 2

This is our second rough cut, we still have to add an interview with our Principal, of long road, but an appointment needs to be made.

Art Documentary Analysis

The documentary starts with a main title and a short tune with a short comment on Art - If you can draw a circle you are an artist - This immediately gives an interest, for example if someone is watching who may not have an interest in art because they believe they do not have the skill may watch on to find out more.

Next are two establishing shots, the first the interviewee - with out name or occupation (I believe this is because we are already meant to know who he is as it is a specialised documentary) - then a shot of shop gates with graffiti over it which transforms into the interviewees graffiti name, ESPO. After 10 or so seconds of ESPO speaking his real name, Steve Powers, and graffiti name comes up.

While Powers is talking it skips between shots of him and the transformations of the art. These are ideas we could use for our Documentary as they are visually pleasing and keep you interested. This is the basic structure for the rest of the Documentary with added effects to make it even more visually better.

Budget 2.

In the end we the trip to Bournemouth came a considerable ammount cheaper. We did end up going over night so accomadation did not need to be paid for and the food was cheaper. Because we didn't stay we didn't have to pay for the bus driver to stay over night to take us back the next day. Our teacher also managed call around other coach companies and got the trip down to £675.

Interaction

The main difference between Interaction and Commision is that Interaction there is a emphasis on local community project. Where as Commision was finding a client, even if the client was doing it for a profit. A good target audience for Interaction is young people as they are the future of the community.

Initially this project is an insight which can show young people (Diploma or other students, for example Media) the different ways and opportunities in getting involved with the Media Industry and the routes to multiple careers through experiences with employers and education.

Budget

This is the budget that was given to Simon so that he could produce the project and get it going.

Travel £ 1000 Hire coach(for Bournemouth)
Accommodation £20 per head for overnight at Bournemouth, based on staying in a hostel £400
Food £20 per head £400
Uni fees £500 pay for student mentors from Bournemouth

Equipment costs at LR/Coleridge Nothing
We completed the Rough Cut version and wanted Feedback of our Client, Simon Bates.

This is the Feedback -

"Visuals looks clear and mature.
Audio sounds good.
Interviews with the students, Junction staff, lecturers interviews. More, e.g Nick would be great, Sandra at Long Road, Jonathan at Bournemouth for interviews.
Demonstrations of students working alongside Junction and Bournemouth staff, Some good footage but more of the Samba and CRaM conference would be great.
Interviews with students who are going to Bournemouth and how Long Road has developed the link. Needs more of this
Information for other consortia on how to schools and FE colleges should engage with employers. More on: students saying how important this is to the success of diplomas, at the end of the day this is why students do diplomas!

Shakin Moos Client Work

Today I went to Shakin' Moos. The client, Chris Lane, had asked me to create a design for a sandwich board which would be placed outside the shop on Valentines Day. The promotion was '2 Large Valentine Shakes £5' he wanted a clean design and uncrowded, with plenty of hearts. I then gave him an idea of instead of an arrow through the heart, a straw would be appropriate to the shop.

Chris didn't have the right equipment so I bought some pens and got a reciept, he then reinbursed the money.

Spent 2 hours today creating it.

Shakin Moos Interaction Meeting

Today Myself, Ash and Alex met with the manager of 'Shakin' Moo's' Chris Lane, a local milk shake shop. We had talked to him previously and he had showed interest in our course, so we put forward the idea that we should work for him for some extra research on this project. Today we went to see him for a meeting.

For the meeting we discussed several points. He addressed the ideas he wanted put forward and told us clearly what he expected from us. During the meeting we took notes and I took pictures. Here are the notes:

Order of Priorities:

1. Effective Flyers
2. Effective Student Aimed Flyers
3. New Menu
4. Posters
5. Shop Layout and Design
6. (If possible) Promotional Videos

Equipment available so far:

5x1 meters of pink camouflage cloth (similar to that used in the Shakin' Moo's brand design)
Large Milkshake man costume (Mr. Moo)
Possible large banana outfit
Average quality full-HD camera (Provided by myself)
Tables, chairs and a sandwich board - able to place designs on them.

Meeting Notes and Expectations:

Basic flyer designs - Main and most important job. These flyers are preferably to be designed aiming at the 'Primark' shoppers target market. As it is located near the shop and contains the target audience for the shop, we decided that this would be a perfect place to distribute the flyers, and that they should be designed accordingly.

Once designed, they would be handed out by a man in the Mr. Moo costume around the Primark area.

We decided that the flyer was too 'busy' and needed to be simplified.

Wheel O' Flava - Website Application, mentioned on flyer and not necessary.
Remove some aspects of the flyer such as mention of crepes etc.
Remove information error. (said the word 'shake' instead of the word 'topping' - a mistake that could cost a lot of money. "One Shake Per Flyer" should be "One Topping Per Flyer"
There should be a better map on the flyers, enabling easier locating of the store. The map should also include Primark and the Grafton Center so as to give reference points to people looking at the map.
We considered using Google Maps but decided it too badly done.
Keep the Wifi Symbol on the flyer but change layout - despite it looking quite out of place it adds a 'wow factor'.

One of the features of the shop is that it has a 'bring your own ingredients and we'll blend them' theme. So I thought that as this adds a large amount of excitement and is a very novelty idea, it should be on the flyers. I said that even though a lot of people would never really bother with it, it adds a wow factor to the poster, and makes people more interested.

Images of the flyers and some of my edits and notes, here you can also see the design of pink camouflage:

We decided that bringing in your own ingredients should cut the price of a milkshake. For example, a medium milk shake (Normally £2.60) would become only £2.00. As well as talking about other marketing schemes such as getting the Facebook fan-page working properly.

We were trying to draw ideas from how a milkshake parlour in Newcastle named Shakeaholic draws heavily (and effectively) from an 'emo' and 'goth' audience.

As well as discussing ideas to increase the popularity of the store, for example we put ideas on the table of having milkshake tasting days every week, were people would pay, say, £3.00 to have a taste of that weeks 10 best milkshakes.

When talking about online marketing, Lane made the point that websites such as Facebook have a:

No Cost and High Value

We were also asked to think of designs that could shroud the tables by using the 5x1 meter pink camouflage cloth. Pink is the main colour of the store and it draws heavily from it, as you can see from their websites here:

We were also all given CDs that Lane had made containing all of Shakin' Moo's image material such as fonts, images etc.

We were offered a fee for the work, but turned it down as we felt that it was inappropriate as we were benefiting from experience where Christopher Lane (The Manager) was benefiting from the advertising and our work.

Here are some of the pictures Alex took today:

Todays Lesson

Today me, Philippa and Kirk edited the footage to create a rough cut. We used interviews from Simon Bates and Gary Brown who are part of the Junction, we also used an interview with Pete Fraser. We decided to make it visually more appealing by placing footage from the 5iver over the top of the interview which had relevance to the question and answers, for example when Gary was talking about Junction 5iver we placed live footage over.

Documentary Footage From Junction

There was a lot of footage from the Junction, for example Gig and Interviews. To make this manageable we went through all the footage on two computers making sure we kept the best footage and moved them to a seperate folder. We made sure to keep all the interviews as these were limited are very important.

Todays Lesson

Today Me and Philippa went to work with the footage that students from our class had captured from the Junction Fiver. First we sorted which clips such as shots of CRAM students, Live Footage and Interviews with Junction staff for the documentary, we then placed these files in another folder. This took a while as there were a lot of clips and we had to make sure we did not miss anything, we then opened them up with final cut and I went about sorting them in to 4 folders; Junction Interviews, CRAM Footage, Live Footage and Audience Interview.

In our next session we will be editing the footage and placing live footage over interviews, making sure all the content from the Fiver is relevant for the documentary. There is also other footage we need to find from the CRAM Samber session.

Other projects like Interaction

The Junction also has a group called Young Ambassadors who are young people from Cambridge. The Young Ambassadors have helped planned and had meetings to create a more youthful experience and atmosphere. It started in March 2009 and has since made a positive start, they have worked with Architecture graduates to design a new front Foyer for the Junction building and they've also started a Summer Intensive programme.

Along side these they have also put up young artists work in Cambridge shops which have been made redundant. I placed several sketches in ther Mr Shoe shop next to Market Square.

This Interaction with the junction is much like our partnership with Simon. It's a chance for students to work with profesionals at the junction.

Strawberry Fair FilmFestival

Oncea year Strawberry Fair, A local Cambridge fair, sets up a film festival in which young and local film makers and others around the country submit their own short films and get them shown at evening, in 2010 however with the cancellation of the fair the local council has agreed to host the short film festival now known as “ Strawberry shorts Film Festival” as part of their “The Big Weekend” where the festival will be held on Parkers Piece in the centre of Cambridge.
This project is set up in partnership Junction and the promo project promoting a space for young people to play live music and grow a fan base. While the document is to promote the education and learning side of the junction in partnership with the diploma giving students the chance to go backstage and discover the orginisation and effort that goes into a live band night.

Our job as the documentary group is to create a skill-set video lasting approximately 6-10 minutes. Within these minutes we have to include interviews, footage of the fiver event, samba workshop, cutaways, and voice overs. Within these categories we will have to include interviews with staff at the Junction and staff at long road and Bournemouth. The main aim for this documentary is to show the link between how students from Long road CRaM course have been working alongside the Junction to create media products.

Background Research

Before choosing the Simon Bates and Junction as the client. We came up with a few ideas of other places we could work for.

Finding a commission

Addenbrookes Hospital - A woman who works in promotions at Addenbrookes hospital came to our class and asked us to design a poster to promote a rise in students to work at the hospital and receive training in nursing. This poster was to encourage people from different backgrounds and societies, for a more varied work place. This would be a good experience working with a client and interacting with them meeting their needs in terms of brief, but I didn't feel there was much room for creativity.
Arts Picture House - The APH is a cinema that serves the community in the city centre. Together with other Picture Houses are the independent cinema operator in the UK. Last year I worked for them during their film festival, this could present an opportunity in which they could help me in my course and be my client to produce some work for them.
Shakin' Moos - SM is a local milk shake shop, specialising in blending any ingredients. Me and two others approached them and asked if they wanted any work produced i.e. promos, adverts and art work. Chris Lane (the manager) thought this was a good idea and gave us flyers to produce, this is the best idea for our project so far.
The Junction - The Junction is a arts centre providing for dance, theatre and music. Are college is linked with The Junction as the CRAM have often done lessons there. The Junction often hold a night called The Junction Fiver, this is essentially 5 bands for a fiver. They often have the same bands, nearly all local and occasionally from across the nation. The try to have bands from all ranges from young teenagers to a lot older. Simon Bates from The Junction has asked for a promo to encourage bands to get involved, not promoting to sell tickets.

The Junction is the client we'll be going with, but I will continue with Shakin' Moos as a side project.

Junction community

The Junction is a community based organisation which takes on the entertainment and learning role for the community of Cambridge and as Cambridge is a City of University and Colleges this is a vital role. Other than the Cornexchange the Junction is the largest venue, while the Cornexchange is more focused on gigs and theatre and not the education side rendering the Junction a more community based centre. The early history of the Junction is much different to how it is today but the same ethics still apply, the Junction began as a new place for rave culture in Cambridge during the 90s. This is because the rave scene was illigal due to the gathering of 100+ people, at which amplified music is played which is likely to cause serious distress to the local community, in the open air and at night. Let alone drug use. The need for the Junction was clear, a safe venue where rave culture is safer, cleaner and a better enviroment gave the Junctiona massive rise in popularity.

Since the 90s the Junction has changed while still keeping it roots and now promotes a venue for the community to hire not any for just rave culture but a whole spread ranging form indie to metal and hiphop, other examples outside of the music realm are drama productions by schools and drama colleges, comedy, and mayballs at an affordable cost. This gives the Junction an active role in the involvement of the growth in community. In an example of the education and community based events the Junction Fiver is a prime example, a Cambridge based event for the community of young local musicians aged between 13 to 19 giving them the chance to play to an audience and create larger fan base. The Fiver is a rare chance to play to a large audience with four other local bands (occasionally bands from up and down the country). This shows the Junctions eagerness to create a safe place for musicians to gain the experience of playing to a large crowd so that in the future if they ever get another chance they wont blow it.
The interaction project is funded by skillset to show a progression progress from school on to 6th form college then university and finally your working career. This emphasised through partnering up with, two forms of career paths, Bournemouth University and the Junction a business and venue which gives us a chance of work related learning. The interaction project must show the interaction with a member of staff or partner of a community based organisation, like a youth center, entertainment venue or local charity. This involves a two way process featuring a clear line of learning through continuous work and feedback from the to and from the partner, this gives us the chance to improve our work. The difference between interaction and commision is that the finished project must be a piece of work both the partner and myself feel happy with rather than a client saying what they want and and myself having no creative input.

Interaction - Documentary

This blog is work from the Documentary team focusing on CRAM, Junction and Bournemouth. This project runs alongside the making of the promo video for The Junction. This will document the whole process, from interviews with bands, staff and guests at The Junction Fiver, right down to the final editing.

There were other possible places to do our Project on, for example -
Corn Exchange
Arts Picture House
